How to sketch your floorplan for our drawing service

1. Starting your sketch

  • Please use graph paper as it is easier to follow straight lines. Feel free to download our format at www.floorplannerpartners.com/graphpaper
  • Try to keep spaces in proportion relative to each other and use the scale but it does not have to be always perfectly in proportion. This way any discrepancies can be avoided by refering to the sketch and measurements rather than just one or the other.
  • Please try to keep your sketch is as neat as possible.

2. Measuring your rooms

  • Measure the widest parts of the room to gain its main dimensions with your laser measuring device or measuring tape. If the room is an irregular shape then please add a few measurements to your sketch. This is helpfull with for instance ‘L’ shaped rooms or a diagonal or rounded wall. Do not forget to name your rooms clearly and add all dimensions on your sketch.
  • Your sketch is not an architectural plan or a work of art but we want it to be as clear and as accurate as possible. If a wall has two windows and a door, then add two windows and a door.

3. Your hallways and stairs

  • Typically,  hallways will draw themselves since they are the space left if you draw all the other rooms correclty. Simply said, the spaces left should create these spaces which you can then simply block in. Stairs don’t necessarily need measurements unless they seem to be notably different. Then  feel free to add measurements.

4. When adding floors

  • Please make sure to remember to name each floor! If you have a basement then please add this in too. Lay out floors as clearly as possible and use one page per floor. Please do not fit multiple floors on to the same page.

5. Gardens and surroundings

  • For gardens and external areas we do not need you to draw it to scale. Please add shape of the garden and/or external areas in relation to the building. Simply add "Garden extends to…"
  • You can add hatching to them to indicate that they are external areas and please label these areas.
